Bristol Herald Courier sports reporter Brian T. Smith spent two months investigating ETSU's 2003 decision to kill its football program.

After interviews with 50 different people, Smith learned that ETSU had a chance a decade ago to become the summer home of the Tennessee Titans, that an e-mail about the program cancellation was leaked before the official announcement, and that professors lobbied their students last year to vote against bringing back football.
